On a late afternoon in Elizabeth, New Jersey, a verbal dispute inside a Chinese-food restaurant on Second Street escalated into a fatal act of violence that claimed the life of 22-year-old Bryant Sanders. The Black / African American man, a resident of Elizabeth, was fatally shot on February 24, 2014, in an incident that sent shockwaves through the local community.
The events of that day unfolded around 4:45 p.m., beginning with a reported argument between Sanders and another young man inside the restaurant.
Following the disagreement, Sanders and an acquaintance left the establishment. They were then pursued by 19-year-old Kamille Grant of Newark. It was at this point that Grant allegedly produced a handgun and opened fire in their direction. Sanders was struck multiple times by the gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene. The sudden and public nature of the shooting left friends, family, and the wider community in mourning and searching for answers.
In the months that followed, a joint investigation by the Union County Homicide Task Force and the Elizabeth Police Department led to a significant breakthrough in the case. Through their efforts, Kamille Grant was identified as the primary suspect in the shooting death of Bryant Sanders. In May 2014, authorities located and arrested Grant, bringing a sense of progress to an investigation that had been diligently piecing together the events of that tragic day.
Following his arrest, the legal process moved forward, and a Union County grand jury returned an indictment against Kamille Grant. He was formally charged with first-degree murder and two weapons offenses in connection with Sanders' death. Grant was subsequently lodged in the Union County Jail, with his bail set at $600,000, as the justice system prepared to address the violent end to a young man's life that began with a simple dispute in a local restaurant.
