On a Monday afternoon in Elizabeth, New Jersey, tragedy struck the community. Seventeen-year-old Paul Andrew Baez, a male high school senior with aspirations of becoming a professional soccer player, was found on the 100 block of Fulton Street with multiple gunshot wounds. The date was September 27, 2021, and despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. At the time of the incident, it was reported that he was on his way to a relative's house for dinner when the fatal shots were fired.
The death of the young athlete, described as a beloved son, friend, and teammate who brought light to his soccer team, prompted an intensive investigation. The Union County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Task Force and the Elizabeth Police Department led the inquiry into the shooting.
In the initial stages of the investigation, authorities reached out to the public for any information that could lead to the apprehension of those responsible, with a reward being offered for tips that would result in an indictment and conviction. Following their arrests, they were sent to the Union County Jail to await their initial court appearances.
