In the late summer of 2025, a sense of unease settled over the community of Havre-Saint-Pierre in Quebec. On the morning of Saturday, August 2nd, two local men, 68-year-old Nelson Boudreau and 36-year-old Grégory Landry, embarked on a journey by sea. They departed from the harbour of Havre-Saint-Pierre around 8 a.m. in a pleasure boat, with their destination set for Blanc-Sablon. The two men had a plan to check in with family upon reaching La Romaine, a community along their route, but that call was never made. As the weekend passed with no word from either Nelson or Grégory, concern grew among their loved ones. By the following Tuesday, they were officially reported as missing, prompting the involvement of the Canadian Coast Guard who initiated a search and rescue operation that afternoon. The search for the two missing men was extensive, covering a wide expanse of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Canadian Coast Guard deployed multiple vessels, including the NGCC Cap Tourmente, NGCC Cap Aupaluk, NGCC A. Leblanc, and NGCC Cap Norman, to scour the waters between Havre-Saint-Pierre and Harrington Harbour, including the area around Blanc-Sablon. They were joined by air support from the Canadian Armed Forces, a Transport Canada aircraft, and a Provincial Airlines plane, all crisscrossing the skies in the hope of spotting the missing boat or the men. The Sûreté du Québec also participated in ground searches along the coastline. A significant clue emerged with the discovery of gasoline cans identified as belonging to the two men in the vicinity of the Galibois Islands. This finding led to a concentration of the search efforts in the area between Kegaska and Harrington Harbour. Despite the intensive search efforts by sea and air, there was no sign of Nelson Boudreau, Grégory Landry, or their boat. On the evening of Thursday, August 7, 2025, the Canadian Coast Guard made the difficult decision to call off the official search and rescue operation. The decision was based on several factors, including the estimated survival time in the water and the extensive number of hours already dedicated to the search. The case was then transferred to the Sûreté du Québec for further investigation. In the days that followed, the families and community members, heartbroken but not without hope, organized their own searches. The father of Grégory Landry, along with other citizens, continued to look for the two men, even chartering a helicopter to survey the area. Members of the Innu community from Unamen Shipu and residents of other Lower North Shore villages also played a crucial role in these continued efforts, demonstrating a powerful display of community solidarity in the face of this tragic disappearance. The disappearance of Nelson Boudreau and Grégory Landry remains a painful and unresolved event for their families and the close-knit community of Havre-Saint-Pierre, a stark reminder of the unforgiving nature of the sea.
