On a late Saturday afternoon in May, tragedy struck in the city of Camden. Britton Lloyd Knox, a 28-year-old man, was on the 1300 block of Browning Street when the sound of multiple gunshots shattered the day. Responding to a ShotSpotter activation and 911 calls around 2:23 p.m. on May 28, 2016, Camden County Police officers found Knox suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Cooper University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe. Within half an hour, at approximately 2:58 p.m., he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of Britton Knox led authorities to 23-year-old Jermaine Burnett. Burnett was formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting. At the time the charges were brought forward, Burnett was already in state prison for a parole violation related to an unlawful use of a handgun case.
He was served with the murder warrant while incarcerated.
The legal proceedings that followed were emotionally charged for the friends and family of Britton Knox. During the suspect's arraignment, the courtroom was filled with raw emotion as loved ones mourned their loss. A judge set Jermaine Burnett's bail at $1 million. Britton Knox was laid to rest after a funeral service at the Antioch Baptist Church on Ferry Avenue in Camden, with his final resting place at Harleigh Cemetery.
