On a summer evening in Camden, New Jersey, a senseless act of violence cut short the life of 13-year-old Ralph Gordon. The young male was inside Litwin's Food Market at the corner of Morton and Royden Streets on July 1, 1974, when two men entered and announced a robbery. In the chaotic moments that followed, gunfire erupted, and when the assailants fled, six people had been shot.
Ralph Gordon tragically succumbed to his injuries, becoming the sole fatality in the brutal hold-up.
The community was left in shock and fear following the violent incident. The five other victims, who were also inside the small grocery store, were rushed to the hospital with varying injuries. The brazen nature of the crime, a holdup that turned into a deadly shooting, sent ripples of concern throughout the city. Law enforcement immediately launched an investigation into the robbery and homicide, seeking to bring the perpetrators to justice.
