In the late summer of 1949, a wave of violence shattered the peace of Camden, New Jersey, forever altering the lives of many. Among the innocent victims was Clark R. Hoover, a 45-year-old male resident of the city. His life was abruptly and tragically cut short on September 6, 1949, when he became one of the casualties in a devastating shooting spree.
The day began like any other in the quiet neighborhood, but it would end in a horrific act of violence.
A local man, Howard Unruh, a 28-year-old World War II veteran, embarked on a rampage through his community. Armed with a Luger pistol, he moved methodically through the streets, targeting neighbors and strangers alike in what would become known as the 'Walk of Death.'
Clark Hoover was tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time. As Unruh carried out his deadly assault, Hoover became one of his thirteen victims who were fatally shot in a matter of minutes. The senseless act of violence left the community in shock and mourning. In the aftermath, law enforcement quickly identified and apprehended Howard Unruh as the sole person responsible for the massacre.
Unruh was taken into custody and subsequently diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He was found criminally insane and was committed to a state psychiatric hospital, where he remained for the rest of his life. For the families of the victims, including those of Clark Hoover, the devastating loss and the shocking nature of the crime left an indelible mark on their lives and on the history of their city.
