In the early hours of a Tuesday morning in Camden, New Jersey, the life of 21-year-old Quashawn Smith was tragically cut short. On August 15, 2023, at approximately 12:57 a.m., gunfire erupted in the lobby of the Northgate 1 apartment building. When Camden County Police Department officers arrived at the scene, they discovered two young men suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both Smith, a resident of Camden, and a 20-year-old male from West Deptford were rushed to Cooper University Hospital
for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Quashawn Smith succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m. The second victim sustained injuries but survived the violent encounter. The incident quickly prompted an active and ongoing investigation by detectives from the Camden County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit and the Camden County Police Department.
In the days that followed, law enforcement officials worked diligently to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Their investigation led to a significant development on the morning of August 29, 2023. A 16-year-old male from Camden was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force. The juvenile was subsequently charged with first-degree felony murder and weapons-related offenses. Following his arrest, he was detained at the Lakeland Juvenile Detention Center.
