In the early morning hours of May 19, 2019, violence shattered the quiet of a North Camden neighborhood, leaving one man dead and another wounded. Michael Rojas, a 31-year-old male resident of the city, was discovered inside a home on the 100 block of Vine Street with fatal gunshot wounds. The call reporting gunfire came in at approximately 5:30 a.m., and when authorities arrived, they found a grim scene.
A short distance away, near the intersection of Front and State streets, another
victim, a 36-year-old man, was also found suffering from gunshot wounds. Both men were rushed to Cooper University Hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Michael Rojas succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly before 9 a.m. The second victim was hospitalized, though his condition was not immediately made public.
The death of Michael Rojas marked the 13th homicide in Camden that year, a statistic that underscored a troubling increase in violence within the community.
