In the fading light of a Friday evening in Camden, New Jersey, the life of 33-year-old Akeem Jenkins was tragically cut short. On October 27, 2023, what might have been a typical night took a devastating turn. At approximately 8:00 p.m., the sound of gunfire shattered the peace on the 2800 block of Hull Road. When the echoes of the shots subsided, Jenkins and a 32-year-old woman were left suffering from gunshot wounds.
The immediate aftermath was a scene of urgency and flashing lights as first responders descended upon the neighborhood. Both Jenkins and the female victim were quickly transported to Cooper University Hospital, a place of hope that would, for one of them, become a place of finality. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Jenkins succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 8:41 p.m.
The woman he was with was treated for her injuries and was eventually released from the hospital.
The investigation into the shooting began immediately, with detectives from the Camden County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit and the Camden County Police Department working to piece together the events of that fatal night. Their efforts led them to a suspect, 19-year-old Avonte Muse, a resident of Camden. In a turn of events, Muse was already in custody on an unrelated charge when the investigation pointed to his involvement in the shooting.
Just over a week after the incident, on November 4, 2023, Avonte Muse was charged in connection with the shooting. He faces the grave charges of first-degree murder for the death of Akeem Jenkins and second-degree aggravated assault for the injuries sustained by the female victim. While an arrest has been made, the motive behind the shooting and the full circumstances of that violent encounter remain part of the ongoing investigation, leaving a community to grapple with the loss of a life taken too soon. Muse remains in custody at the Camden County Jail.
