On the evening of September 26, 2016, Denis Sloboda, a 33-year-old White/Caucasian male, was filled with the joy and anticipation of a new father. His wife had recently given birth to their son, and he was on his way to the hospital in Federal Way, Washington, to be with them. However, his journey was tragically cut short in what appeared to be a brutal act of road rage. The night took a dark turn when Sloboda was found fatally shot inside his vehicle in the 32800 block of Hoyt Road SW.
Neighbors had called 911 around 10:30 p.m. after hearing gunshots, and responding officers discovered the grim scene.
Earlier that evening, a shaken Sloboda had arrived at his brother's home in Northeast Tacoma. He recounted a terrifying encounter that began as a traffic dispute. He told his brother that another driver had become enraged, followed him, and at one point, brandished a gun. From the balcony of the home, Sloboda's brother caught a glimpse of a man dressed in all white, staring up at their house from across the street. Believing the threat had passed after some time, Sloboda decided to continue his trip to the hospital. It was a decision that would prove fatal. Just minutes after he left, the sounds of gunfire echoed through the night.
The investigation into Denis Sloboda's murder was launched immediately, with detectives suspecting a link to the road rage incident he had described to his brother. His silver Lexus was found riddled with bullets, a testament to the violence of the attack. Despite their efforts, police were unable to identify a suspect, and no arrests have been made in the case. The description of the man in white and a red motorcycle reportedly seen in the area did not lead to a breakthrough.
The tragedy was compounded just days later when shots were fired during a vigil held for Sloboda near the location of his death. While no one was injured in this subsequent incident, it added another layer of fear and uncertainty to a case that has left a family heartbroken and a community searching for answers. The killing of Denis Sloboda remains an unsolved homicide, a painful reminder of a life cut short on a night that should have been one of celebration.
