In the late summer of 2016, a sequence of events unfolded in Trenton, New Jersey, that culminated in the tragic death of 19-year-old Lance Beckett. A Black male, Beckett was lured into an alley on East Stuyvesant Avenue on the afternoon of September 18, 2016, under deceptive pretenses. There, in the city's West Ward, his life was violently cut short.
Surveillance footage from the area captured Beckett interacting with three other individuals just moments before the fatal encounter.
These individuals were later identified as Quashawn Emanuel, then 18, Mada Eoff, who was 17 at the time, and Omar Kennedy, 34. Prosecutors stated that Emanuel had admitted to his role in setting up Beckett. Once in the alley, Beckett was shot multiple times, with rounds striking his neck and left shoulder, and a final, fatal shot entering through his back. Witnesses reported that after being shot, Beckett was also brutally stomped. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide led to the swift apprehension of the suspects. Emanuel and Eoff were arrested within days of the murder, and Kennedy was taken into custody in Richmond, Virginia, about three weeks later. All three were initially charged with murder and weapons offenses. The case against Eoff, despite his age, was moved to adult court.
The legal proceedings brought a series of resolutions for the three men charged. Quashawn Emanuel ultimately pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of reckless manslaughter. Omar Kennedy also reached a plea agreement, admitting to third-degree aggravated assault for a recommended sentence of three years. The prosecution's case against Mada Eoff went to trial, where a co-defendant's testimony proved crucial. Despite the absence of DNA evidence, a murder weapon, or fingerprints linking him directly to the crime, the jury found Eoff guilty of murder. He was later sentenced to 38 years in prison for the shooting death of Lance Beckett.
