On the night of September 16, 2023, just before midnight, Trenton police responded to multiple ShotSpotter activations near Brunswick Avenue and Middle Rose Street. Upon arrival, officers found 37-year-old Trenton resident, Balil Scott Lewis, lying on the sidewalk in the center of Middle Rose Street, suffering from numerous gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.
