In the early morning hours of July 19, 2014, the life of 23-year-old Jamer Jay Greenfield was tragically cut short on a street in Trenton, New Jersey. A Black male and lifelong resident of the city, Greenfield was a father of three who was educated in the local public school system. The incident unfolded around 5 a.m. in the 200 block of Rosemont Avenue, where Trenton police officers, drawn by the sound of gunshots, discovered a chaotic scene with a large group of people fleeing. Greenfield was found lying on the ground, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including one to his chest. He was rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
For years, the investigation into Greenfield's murder continued, with detectives persistently seeking witnesses and evidence.
His mother, Talaya Greenfield, became a fervent advocate for justice for her son, at one point filing a lawsuit against Mercer County prosecutors and the Trenton Police in an effort to obtain documents related to the case. Though the lawsuit was eventually dismissed, her quest for answers underscored the family's prolonged anguish and the complexities of the investigation. For a long time, investigators had a suspect in mind but lacked the sufficient evidence to bring charges forward.
A significant breakthrough in the cold case came in July 2022, eight years after Greenfield's death, with the arrest of 40-year-old Jonathan Woody of Trenton. The Mercer County Homicide Task Force's diligent and protracted investigation finally bore fruit, leading to Woody being charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and other related offenses. The prosecutor's office has since filed a motion to keep him detained pending trial.
The investigation suggests that the motive for the fatal shooting was a botched robbery. Reports from witnesses indicated that playing cards were scattered at the scene, and it has been suggested that Greenfield may have been targeted for a chain he was wearing. A key witness, who came forward in 2016, provided crucial testimony, stating that Woody had attempted to rob Greenfield and, following a struggle, shot him in the chest. This information proved pivotal in the eventual arrest and charging of Jonathan Woody, bringing a measure of progress to a case that had remained unresolved for nearly a decade.
