In the autumn of 2017, the life of 26-year-old Hydee Wrice, a male from Newark, New Jersey, was tragically cut short. On the evening of October 29th, Newark Police officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Littleton Avenue following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered Wrice inside a vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services promptly transported him to University Hospital, where he fought for his life for a week.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, Hydee Wrice succumbed to his injuries and passed away on November 5, 2017.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify a suspect in the case. On November 15, 2017, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office announced that 25-year-old Robert Steele, also a resident of Newark, had been arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting. The charges against Steele were subsequently upgraded to murder following Wrice's death. He was taken into custody and held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark.
The death of Hydee Wrice was part of a larger, devastating narrative of loss for his family. He was one of four brothers from the same Newark family to lose their lives to gun violence over the span of several years.
