On a late Wednesday morning in Newark, New Jersey, the life of 44-year-old Murad Loyal was tragically cut short. The Florham Park man, a Black / African American male, was on the 100 block of Weequahic Avenue on June 21, 2023, when gunfire erupted. Police responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 10:33 a.m. and discovered Loyal suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to University Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 11:14 a.m.
Investigators from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force are actively working the case. At the scene, they recovered six shell casings, suggesting the use of a semi-automatic weapon. Surveillance footage from a nearby business captured a chilling sequence of events. The video reportedly shows a man in dark clothing approaching Loyal, who was near a dark-colored Mercedes-Benz. The unknown assailant is seen firing a handgun at Loyal before quickly fleeing the scene.
Despite the video evidence, no arrests have been made in the fatal shooting, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects. The investigation remains active and ongoing. The motive for the shooting has not been released.
