In the early evening of June 10, 2019, Hassan Reeds, a 46-year-old male from Irvington Township, was fatally shot in Newark, New Jersey. The incident occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. in the South Ward, on the 400 block of Chancellor Avenue, not far from Weequahic High School. Responding to reports of gunfire, police discovered Reeds at the scene with a gunshot wound to his head.
He was quickly transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken charge of the investigation into the death of Reeds. At this time, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the shooting. The motive behind the killing also remains undisclosed as the investigation continues. Officials are asking anyone with information to come forward and contact the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force.
Reeds himself had a history with law enforcement. In 2005, he was charged in connection with the shooting death of Newark Special Police Officer Dwayne Reeves, which also occurred near Weequahic High School. However, in 2007, a jury acquitted Reeds of the murder charge. He was convicted on a single charge of receiving stolen property related to the incident and was sentenced to ten years in prison.
