On the evening of August 13, 2022, a burst of gunfire shattered the night on the 200 block of Renner Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. When police arrived at approximately 9:44 p.m., they discovered 23-year-old Thomas Pickett suffering from gunshot wounds. Pickett, a male who had a vibrant and humorous personality, was rushed to University Hospital, but his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead at 10:16 p.m.
Another victim, a female, was also injured in the shooting and taken to the same hospital for treatment.
Born in Patterson, New Jersey, on July 10, 1999, Thomas was known as an excellent student and a loyal friend. After graduating from Barringer High School, he dedicated himself to pursuing a career in music, spending his days in the studio and with loved ones. His sudden and violent death left his family and friends reeling from the loss of a young man with a promising future.
The investigation into the homicide was handled by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. Their efforts led to the arrest of 23-year-old Tyquil Martin of Newark. Martin was charged with murder, unlawful possession of a handgun, and possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose in connection with Pickett's death. Authorities announced the charges against Martin in October 2022, though the investigation was said to be active and ongoing at that time.
