In the early moments of a Saturday, just after midnight on July 23, 2022, the life of 31-year-old Tameel Grimes was tragically cut short on the 300 block of New Street in Newark, New Jersey. Newark police officers discovered Grimes at approximately 12:22 a.m., having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Despite the immediate response, he was pronounced dead at the scene less than thirty minutes later.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a chaotic and violent scene that extended
beyond the initial discovery. Not far from where Grimes was found, another man was located on Norfolk and Hartford streets, also suffering from a gunshot wound. This second victim survived the attack and was transported to University Hospital for treatment. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, took charge of the intensive investigation that followed.
The diligent work of law enforcement led to a significant breakthrough in the case. Joseph Dowdell, a 33-year-old resident of Newark, was identified as the primary suspect. He was subsequently arrested and faced a series of serious charges, including first-degree murder for the death of Tameel Grimes, second-degree assault in connection with the non-fatal shooting of the second victim, and two weapons offenses.
The investigation also implicated a second individual. Shanade McDaniel, 31, also from Newark, was arrested and charged with second-degree hindering prosecution, indicating an alleged attempt to obstruct the investigation into the fatal shooting. The case against both Dowdell and McDaniel underscored the commitment of local authorities to bring justice for Grimes and his family. The investigation remained active and ongoing as officials continued to piece together the events of that fatal night.
