On July 2, 2023, at approximately 11:42 a.m., Newark police responded to a report of a shooting on the 100-block of First Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 47-year-old Newark resident Tanton Venable suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite prompt medical attention, Venable was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:55 a.m.
