On the night of October 6, 2014, police in Springfield, Missouri, responded to reports of gunfire in the 1800 block of North Weller Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of Charles J. Cortez, a 21-year-old male, lying in the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. At the scene, authorities also located a female victim, Shannon L.
Gibson, who had sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the same incident.
Investigators determined that the violence had erupted inside a vehicle where Cortez, Gibson, and two other individuals were passengers. The group had accepted a ride from two men, later identified as the primary suspects. According to court testimony, the shooting was precipitated by a methamphetamine deal that went awry. As the situation escalated, the driver pulled out a handgun and began firing within the confines of the car. While Gibson was wounded and another passenger, Jason Moreno, managed to escape the moving vehicle, Cortez was fatally struck and subsequently pushed out of the car onto the road before the suspects fled the scene.
Law enforcement launched a search for the perpetrators, eventually tracking them to Lebanon, Missouri, following a tip. The suspects, identified as Brian S. Jones and Devon Gallop, attempted to elude capture, leading to a vehicle pursuit that ended in a crash. Although they initially fled the crash site on foot, both were apprehended. Jones and Gallop were booked into the Greene County Jail and charged in connection with the homicide.
The legal proceedings concluded years later when a jury found Brian S. Jones guilty of second-degree murder and armed criminal action in December 2016. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence linking the shooting to the dispute over drugs inside the vehicle. In March 2017, Jones received a sentence of life in prison for his role in the death of Charles Cortez, bringing a measure of closure to the violent events that unfolded on that October night.
