On a summer evening in Newark, New Jersey, the life of Rasheed Mells, a 24-year-old male from the neighboring town of Irvington, was tragically cut short. On Saturday, July 16, 2022, on the 700 block of South 20th Street, Mells was shot. The Essex County Sheriff's Office was notified of the shooting, and upon their arrival, they found Mells grievously wounded.
He was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:07 p.m.
Known to his friends and family as 'Trippo,' Mells was a charismatic and free-spirited individual with a passion for music. He dreamed of becoming a famous rap artist and was considered one of Newark's promising up-and-coming talents. In his younger years, he was known for his love of dancing, particularly to Jersey Club music, and also played sports. Family was incredibly important to him, and he was described as a great-hearted person who always tried to see the good in everyone.
The investigation into the fatal shooting was handled by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect. In late August 2022, authorities announced the arrest of Chauncey Venable in connection with the death of Rasheed Mells.
Venable was subsequently charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
