In the South Ward of Newark, on the afternoon of November 18, 2024, a young man's life was cut short by gunfire. Ahmid Yasim Nijee Richardson, a 22-year-old male, was in the vicinity of the 100 block of Renner Avenue near Bergen Street when the incident occurred. Around 5 p.m., the sound of multiple gunshots prompted a ShotSpotter activation, alerting law enforcement to the scene.
Upon their arrival, police officers discovered Richardson suffering from severe gunshot wounds.
He was unconscious and unresponsive. Emergency medical services were dispatched and administered CPR before rushing him to University Hospital. Despite their efforts, Ahmid Richardson was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at the hospital.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken the lead in the ongoing homicide investigation. Detectives canvassed the area for evidence and any additional victims, but no arrests have been announced in connection with the fatal shooting. Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or a motive in the case. The investigation remains active as they continue to seek information from the public to bring clarity to the events of that tragic afternoon.
