In the crisp autumn air of a Wednesday evening, the city of Newark was pierced by the sound of gunfire, a harbinger of the tragedy that would soon unfold. On October 18, 2023, in the West Ward of the city, a report of a shooting sent Newark police officers rushing to the 700 block of South Orange Avenue. There, they found a man lying outside, suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was identified as 61-year-old Kevin E. Brown, a resident of Newark.
