In the early morning hours of a Saturday in Newark, New Jersey, tragedy struck on the 100-block of Avon Avenue. Larry Oliver, a 38-year-old man, was shot on September 19, 2020. The incident occurred around 12:50 a.m., prompting a police investigation. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Oliver severely injured, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his face, chest, and leg. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:06 a.m.
Larry T. Oliver, known affectionately to friends and family as “Murf” or “L,” was a lifelong resident of Newark. He attended Malcolm X Shabazz High School. He was a father, and his son was the center of his world.
Described as a protector of his family, his death left a deep void in the lives of his loved ones.
The investigation into the fatal shooting was taken over by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. Preliminary findings suggested that a gunman approached Oliver and fired at him at point-blank range before fleeing the scene. In the days following the shooting, authorities announced that no arrests had been made and that the suspect remained at large. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and authorities have encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
