On a late summer evening in Newark, New Jersey, the life of 34-year-old Michael Rutledge, a Black male, was abruptly cut short. Just before 9 p.m. on Monday, August 23, 2021, the sound of gunfire echoed in the area of Spruce Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard. When Newark Police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Rutledge lying on the sidewalk, having sustained multiple bullet wounds.
