On a late summer evening in Newark, New Jersey, the life of 34-year-old Michael Rutledge, a Black male, was abruptly cut short. Just before 9 p.m. on Monday, August 23, 2021, the sound of gunfire echoed in the area of Spruce Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard. When Newark Police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Rutledge lying on the sidewalk, having sustained multiple bullet wounds.
Despite the immediate response and efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:27 p.m.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward, making public appeals for assistance from the community. A tip line was established to gather any potential leads that could shed light on the circumstances surrounding Rutledge's death.
Tragically, this was not the only violent death to befall the family. Less than five months later, Michael Rutledge's brother, Radress S. Wilson, was also shot and killed in Newark. As of the latest available information, the investigation into Michael Rutledge's murder remains active and ongoing. No arrests have been made in connection with his death, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains unsolved, leaving a family to grapple with the loss of two of its members to gun violence.
