On a summer afternoon, the Fourth of July was tragically cut short for a Newark man. Earl Cohen, a 46-year-old male resident of Newark, was fatally shot on the 100 block of Brookdale Avenue. The incident, which also claimed the life of 36-year-old Nekeya Grady of Willingboro, unfolded around 3 p.m. Both Cohen and Grady were pronounced dead at the scene at 2:58 p.m.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police, immediately began an investigation into the double homicide.
Authorities publicly announced that they were seeking information from the community to help solve the case.
Despite the ongoing and active investigation, no arrests have been made in connection with the fatal shootings of Earl Cohen and Nekeya Grady. The case remains open as law enforcement continues to seek answers and bring those responsible to justice. The community was asked to provide any relevant information to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force.
