In the winter of 2018, a burst of gunfire shattered the afternoon calm in a Newark neighborhood, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. The victim was Victor Bryant, a 28-year-old male resident of the city. On Thursday, January 4th, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Bryant was in the vicinity of the 100 block of Chadwick Avenue when he was struck by bullets. In the immediate aftermath, he was transported by a private vehicle to a nearby hospital.
Despite the urgent medical attention he received, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead by doctors.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with the Newark Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. Bryant's death marked the first homicide of the new year in the city of Newark.
