In the early hours of a Friday morning, the vibrant energy of downtown Newark was shattered by gunfire. On June 18, 2021, Christopher Williams, a 31-year-old Black man from Somerville, was fatally shot on the 200 block of Washington Street. The incident, which unfolded outside of the City Lounge, also left a 28-year-old man wounded, though he survived his injuries. Williams was rushed to University Hospital, but his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead at 2:13 a.m.
