In the spring of 2020, a shooting in Newark, New Jersey, claimed the life of 33-year-old Derrick Pinkett. On the evening of April 25th, shortly after 9 p.m., Newark police were dispatched to the vicinity of 91 Frelinghuysen Avenue following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered evidence of a shooting, but no victim was present at the scene.
The investigation quickly led officers from the 5th Precinct to Clinton Avenue, where they were alerted to a male victim inside a
vehicle. This individual was identified as Derrick Pinkett, a resident of nearby Hillside, New Jersey. It was determined that Pinkett had sustained gunshot wounds at the Frelinghuysen Avenue location before moving to Clinton Avenue. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at 9:30 p.m.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force, in conjunction with detectives from the Newark Police Department, is actively investigating the fatal shooting. Despite the ongoing investigation, no arrests have been made in connection with Pinkett's death, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects.
