In the late hours of a summer night in Newark, New Jersey, tragedy befell 25-year-old Bilal D. Rodgers, a Black / African American male. On August 9, 2016, at approximately 11:38 p.m., gunfire erupted in the 100 block of Broad Street, striking Rodgers and a 19-year-old companion. Both men were rushed to University Hospital for medical attention. While the younger victim was stabilized, Rodgers succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 2:24 a.m. on August 10, 2016.
