In the early evening of May 5, 2022, Christopher G. Griffin, a 36-year-old male, was fatally shot in Newark, New Jersey. The incident occurred around 6:54 p.m. in the 300 block of Mount Prospect Avenue. When Newark police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Mr. Griffin, who was pronounced dead at 7:06 p.m. The investigation into his death was led by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.
The shooting, which was captured on video, took place in broad daylight and in the midst of a crowd of people. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, every witness reportedly fled the scene. The investigation led to the identification of Eduardo Rodriguez, 35, of Newark, as the suspect.
At the time of the incident, Rodriguez was on parole for a prior carjacking conviction.
Following a four-day trial, an Essex County jury found Eduardo Rodriguez guilty of the murder of Christopher G. Griffin on June 12, 2024. The jury deliberated for two hours before reaching their verdict. In addition to the murder charge, Rodriguez was also found guilty of unlawful possession of a handgun and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He faces a sentence of 30 years to life in prison.
