On a Thursday evening, February 19, 2015, the life of 23-year-old Ramel McGrady, a Black male from East Orange, New Jersey, was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting in Newark. Around 6 p.m., Newark Police were dispatched to the vicinity of 89 Oration Street following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered McGrady suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m.
The investigation, led by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, revealed that another man was also wounded in the incident. This second victim was found a couple of blocks away from where McGrady was discovered. He was transported to a local hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries and was subsequently released. The connection between the two victims and the circumstances that led to the shooting have been a central focus of the ongoing investigation.
Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and no arrests have been made in connection with Ramel McGrady's death. The case remains an active and open investigation, with authorities continuing to seek information from the public that could lead to the identification and apprehension of any suspects involved. The community was deeply affected by the loss of the young man, whose funeral service was held at Union Baptist Church in Elizabeth, followed by his interment at Fairmount Cemetery in Newark.
