In the late summer of 2006, the life of a young man from Newark, New Jersey, was tragically cut short in a burst of violence that claimed two other lives. Nineteen-year-old Eric Lamar Jackson was inside a Newark apartment on September 2nd when a fatal shooting erupted. The incident, which unfolded in a chaotic and brutal manner, left a total of three people dead and two others wounded.
Among the deceased, alongside Jackson, was a 15-year-old girl, underscoring the youthful tragedy of the event.
The investigation into the triple homicide led authorities to identify three men as suspects in the horrific crime. In the weeks following the shooting, law enforcement, including U.S. Marshals and Newark police, tracked two of the suspects to a relative's home in Indianapolis. Raheem Clay, 23, and Laquan Jackson, 21, were apprehended there. The third suspect, 24-year-old John Wessells of Newark, was taken into custody in Essex County.
The three men faced a litany of charges for their alleged roles in the deadly shooting. These charges included three counts of murder for the deaths of Eric Lamar Jackson and the other two victims, Sandra Bellush, 42, and Brielle Simpkins, 15. Additionally, they were charged with two counts of attempted murder, conspiracy, and weapons possession. The Essex County Prosecutor at the time expressed a determination to bring the suspects back to Newark to face justice for the crime that not only ended three lives but also involved setting fire to the crime scene in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence.
