In the late afternoon of March 6, 2023, a single act of violence cut short the life of 19-year-old Calvin C. Scott in Newark, New Jersey. Responding to a report of a shooting at approximately 3:40 p.m., Newark police discovered the young Black man inside a building on the 300 block of South 6th Street, suffering from gunshot wounds.
Scott was rushed to University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal. He was pronounced dead at 8:03 p.m. that evening.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting.
In the immediate aftermath, authorities appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the apprehension of those responsible. As of the day following the incident, no arrests had been made, and the investigation was described as active and ongoing. Reports from as late as December 2024 indicated that the case remained unsolved, with no suspects publicly identified or apprehended in connection with Scott's death.
