In the early hours of a Friday morning in Newark, New Jersey, the life of 35-year-old Jarad Winston, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. Just after midnight on October 24, 2025, the sound of gunfire pierced the night near 730 South 16th Street. Newark police were alerted to the shooting by the city's ShotSpotter system and quickly responded to the scene.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Winston suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was immediately rushed to University Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life, but his injuries proved to be too severe. A short time after arriving at the hospital, Jarad Winston was pronounced dead.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Task Force has taken the lead on the investigation into this fatal shooting.
