On a Sunday night in July 2015, a burst of violence in Newark, New Jersey, claimed the life of 20-year-old Brent Williams, a male resident of nearby East Orange. The incident unfolded on July 12th, when police responded to reports of a shooting at the intersection of Huntington Terrace and Lehigh Avenue. Arriving at the scene at approximately 10:49 p.m., officers discovered Williams inside a car, unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound.
Alongside Williams, another 20-year-old
male was also found inside the vehicle, injured by gunfire. Emergency services transported both men to University Hospital. While the second victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Brent Williams was pronounced dead at 11:17 p.m.
In the immediate aftermath, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. Authorities appealed to the public for any information that might lead to an understanding of the events that transpired that night. However, in the initial reports following the incident, investigators had not yet determined a motive for the shooting. At the time, no suspects had been identified, and no arrests had been announced in connection with the death of Brent Williams. The investigation was described as active and ongoing as authorities worked to piece together the circumstances that led to the young man's death.
