It was on January 14, 2024, at approximately 4:25 a.m., that police responded to a report of a shooting on the 300 block of Grove Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered a young Black man, 27-year-old TyShad Campbell of Irvington, lying outside and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The emergency responders acted swiftly, transporting him to University Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite their efforts, Campbell was pronounced dead at 4:42 a.m., a mere 17 minutes after the initial police response.
Ty'Shad Campbell was more than just a victim of a violent crime; he was a beloved father, son, brother, cousin, and great-grandson whose sudden death left his family and friends devastated. A 2015 graduate of East Orange Campus High School, Campbell had been a dedicated athlete, playing as a wide receiver and cornerback for the Jaguars varsity football team. His loss was deeply felt by those who knew him, prompting his family to organize a fundraiser to help with the unexpected funeral expenses, a testament to the community's support in the face of such a profound loss.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. The authorities have been diligently working to piece together the circumstances that led to Campbell's untimely death and to identify the individual or individuals responsible for this senseless act of violence. Despite their ongoing efforts and public appeals for information, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Ty'Shad Campbell.
