On December 31, 2023, at approximately 7:01 a.m., Newark police responded to a report of a shooting on the 100 block of Malvern Street. Upon arrival, they discovered 67-year-old Jose F. Gaona suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite prompt medical attention, Gaona was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:25 a.m.
