On a Tuesday evening, September 18, 2018, the life of 17-year-old Jayden Zero Fondeur was tragically cut short in his hometown of Jersey City, New Jersey. A male of Black or African American descent, Fondeur was standing in front of a convenience store on Old Bergen Road when a vehicle approached. Shots were fired from the car, striking the teenager. The Jersey City Police Department received reports of the shooting at approximately 6:25 p.m.
and arrived to find Fondeur unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene roughly half an hour later. An autopsy determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the neck, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide. Friends and family remembered Fondeur, a junior at Ferris High School, as a 'good kid' and a talented basketball player with dreams of playing in the NBA.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrests of three Jersey City residents. Isaiah Huggins, Rayquan Carmichael, and a then-16-year-old Jahmari Hector were charged in connection with Fondeur's death. Investigators suggested the shooting may have stemmed from a dispute between street gangs. The community mourned the loss of the young man, holding vigils and pleading for an end to gun violence. His mother, Johanna Negron, expressed her profound grief and her hope for justice for her son.
Years after the fatal shooting, the legal proceedings concluded, bringing a measure of closure to Fondeur's family. On March 13, 2024, a jury found Rayquan Carmichael and Isaiah Huggins guilty of murder and other related offenses. Subsequently, on July 19, 2024, Carmichael received a 40-year prison sentence for the murder, which was part of a total 51-year sentence for multiple charges. Huggins was sentenced to 42 years in prison for his role in the murder. Jahmari Hector, the third individual who was a juvenile at the time of the crime, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and was sentenced to six years in state prison.
