In the late afternoon of November 4, 2023, a dispute in the 1400 block of L Street in Southeast Washington, D.C., turned fatal, claiming the life of 22-year-old Charles Jaquel Towles. A Black male, Mr. Towles was found by First District officers around 3:45 p.m. suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response and life-saving efforts of D.C.
Fire and Emergency Medical Services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide led detectives to identify 20-year-old Tremon Jackson, also of Southeast D.C., as a suspect. According to police, the incident occurred at a public housing complex where surveillance footage captured a physical altercation between Towles and an individual later identified as Jackson. The dispute, which allegedly concerned Jackson's girlfriend, escalated, and gunfire was observed shortly after. The footage reportedly shows Towles on the ground as Jackson and another individual flee the scene.
Following the investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Tremon Jackson, charging him with Second Degree Murder while Armed. On Thursday, December 28, 2023, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended Jackson. He was subsequently transported to the Homicide Branch for processing. In a court hearing on January 16, 2024, a D.C. Superior Court Judge found probable cause for the case against Jackson to proceed to trial. During the hearing, it was noted that while a weapon was not visible on Jackson in the surveillance footage as he entered the building, the victim, Charles Towles, was confirmed to have been unarmed at the time of the shooting.
