In the late hours of a Saturday in Washington, D.C., the life of Morgan Francis, a 56-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short. On January 21, 2023, at approximately 10:41 p.m., members of the Seventh District of the Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the 4700 block of 1st Street SW following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene inside a residential building.
Inside the residence, officers found Morgan Francis suffering from
apparent gunshot wounds. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene, but upon assessing his condition, they found no signs consistent with life. Mr. Francis was pronounced deceased at the location, his life taken in an act of violence that would leave a community in search of answers. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later took custody of the decedent.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch launched an investigation into the death of Morgan Francis. Detectives began canvassing the area and seeking information from the public to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. To encourage community assistance, the department has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this homicide. To date, there has been no public announcement of any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with the case, and the investigation remains ongoing.
