On the evening of October 5, 2017, a violent altercation in Jersey City led to the death of 37-year-old Donald McLaughlin III. Reports from the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office indicate that at approximately 8:30 p.m., police responded to calls of shots fired in the vicinity of Central Avenue and Graham Street. Upon their arrival, officers discovered McLaughlin unresponsive in the street. He had sustained an apparent gunshot wound to the torso and blunt force trauma to his head. First aid was rendered at the scene before he was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 9:00 p.m. The cause of death was later determined to be a gunshot wound to the torso, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
McLaughlin, a father of three, was reportedly with his brother at the time of the incident. Family members believe that McLaughlin was coming to his brother's aid following an earlier dispute.
A second individual, a 26-year-old man from Jersey City, was also injured during the altercation, receiving treatment for injuries to his head and body before being released. McLaughlin was engaged to be married and was working as a Lyft driver while also enrolled in a mechanic's training program.
Following an investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor's Homicide Unit, an arrest was made in connection with the fatal shooting. Jose Mojica, a 19-year-old from Jersey City, was taken into custody and charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. Authorities have stated that the investigation remains active.
