In Jersey City, a young man's life was cut short in a burst of violence that shattered the city's recent period of peace. Kashyne Grant, a 19-year-old male, was in the area of Garfield Avenue and Brown Place on the afternoon of Friday, October 11, 2024, when gunfire erupted shortly before 5 p.m. Responding officers discovered Grant with a gunshot wound to his upper body.
He was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Kashyne Grant succumbed to his injuries three days later. He was pronounced dead at the hospital just after 10 a.m. on Monday, October 14, 2024. His death marked the fifth homicide in Jersey City for the year and the first since May, ending a notable summer of reduced fatal violence that city officials and community leaders had recently celebrated.
The investigation into the shooting was a joint effort by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department. Their work led to an arrest on Monday, October 21, 2024. The suspect, a 14-year-old male from Jersey City, was taken into custody on Bergen Avenue. He has been charged as a juvenile with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
