Jamila Marie Carter, a 22-year-old African American woman from Cleveland, OH, tragically lost her life on May 29, 2017. She was fatally shot while driving on Cedar Road and East 28th Street in Cleveland's Central neighborhood. The incident occurred on Memorial Day, and Jamila was shot in the head, while her friend Shonna Adams, 21, was shot in the back.
The two were in a Dodge Avenger that was targeted by an SUV from which shots were fired.
The investigation into Jamila's death led to the arrest of Ellis Cobb III, 19, who was charged with felonious assault. Cobb was accused of shooting another woman because he feared she had cooperated with police regarding the 2017 double murder. Detectives linked Cobb to the shooting of Jamila and Shonna, and he was taken into custody about nine hours after the incident.
Cobb's father, Ellis Cobb Jr., was also implicated in the case, as both he and his sons, Ellis Cobb III and Montez Cobb, were considered suspects in homicides since at least 2017. Montez Cobb was serving a 30-year sentence for unrelated crimes at the time.
