In the evening hours of August 4, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the summer calm at Ferris Triangle Park in Jersey City, New Jersey, leaving a young man's life tragically cut short. Alshaquir Duval, a 21-year-old Black / African American male from Jersey City, was fatally shot in an incident that underscored ongoing concerns about gun violence in the community. The shooting occurred around 8:22 p.m.
near the intersection of Rose and Cator Avenues and Old Bergen Road.
Responding officers from the Jersey City Police Department discovered Duval in front of 182 Cator Avenue with gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:32 p.m. The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit, in conjunction with the Jersey City Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the deadly shooting.
The area surrounding Ferris Triangle Park had been known as a hotspot for gang-related violence. Ironically, the park had recently undergone significant renovations aimed at revitalization and crime reduction, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held just over a month prior to the fatal shooting.
