In the early morning hours of September 23, 2018, a dispute in Newark, New Jersey, tragically escalated, leaving 38-year-old Michael Shendock, a male from Voorhees, fatally wounded. The incident unfolded just before 3 a.m. in front of 7 South Street. Newark police officers responded to the scene to find Shendock and another man suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both men were rushed to University Hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, Michael Shendock was pronounced dead at 5:32 a.m. An autopsy would later reveal that he had sustained five gunshot wounds from three distinct gunshots. The second victim, who was shot in the chest and right leg, survived his injuries. The events leading up to the shooting began after Shendock and a friend, Gary Irish, left a drug rehabilitation program and went to a bar. Later, they went to an area on Clinton Avenue with the intention of soliciting prostitutes.
An argument erupted between Shendock and a man later identified as Lonnie Arrington, who was 48 at the time and from Newark. The verbal confrontation quickly turned into a physical altercation that lasted less than a minute. Following the fight, Arrington shot both Shendock and Irish. On October 16, 2018, Lonnie Arrington was arrested at Penn Station by New Jersey Transit Police. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Michael Shendock, aggravated assault in the shooting of the second victim, and weapons offenses.
