In the early morning hours of January 3, 2024, a respected community leader, 52-year-old Hassan Sharif, was shot multiple times just outside the Masjid Muhammad mosque in Newark, New Jersey. The shooting occurred at approximately 6:15 a.m. as the male imam was preparing for the first of the five daily prayers in Islam. He was rushed to University Hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries later that afternoon. Sharif was known as a cleric and an activist who advocated against gun violence and had been the imam at his mosque for five years.
The investigation into the shooting was immediately launched, with state and local officials initially stating that the evidence did not suggest the killing was motivated by bias or an act of domestic terrorism. The community mourned the loss of a man who had worked on anti-violence initiatives and supported programs to keep the city safe.
Despite the initial lack of a clear motive, the investigation has remained active and ongoing.
As the investigation progressed, authorities arrested three men, including the imam's adult son, Abdush K. Sharif, on weapons charges in late January 2024. These arrests were made during the execution of a search warrant at a Newark residence. However, officials have emphasized that these charges are for regulatory violations concerning firearms and that no one has been charged in connection with Hassan Sharif's death. In an effort to generate new leads, authorities have released surveillance video showing a person of interest in the area at the time of the shooting. Investigators have pointed out that the individual in the video has a distinctive walk, hoping that this detail will help the public identify them. A reward of up to $35,000 is being offered for any information that leads to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the imam's death.
