In the early morning hours of January 3, 2024, a respected community leader, 52-year-old Hassan Sharif, was shot multiple times just outside the Masjid Muhammad mosque in Newark, New Jersey. The shooting occurred at approximately 6:15 a.m. as the male imam was preparing for the first of the five daily prayers in Islam.
