In the afternoon hours of October 6, 2018, the life of 27-year-old Jovany Torres was tragically cut short on the streets of Camden, New Jersey. Torres, a Hispanic/Latino male known affectionately by his family and friends as 'Macho,' was found lying on the ground at the intersection of 27th and Berkley streets in East Camden, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The discovery was made by Camden County Police officers who were responding to reports of a shooting in the area around 12:40 p.m.
Emergency services rushed Jovany Torres to Cooper University Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly after his arrival. The news of his death sent ripples of grief through his community, leaving his loved ones to mourn the sudden and violent loss of a man described as having an infectious laugh and a smile that could light up a room. He was a devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan and was known in his neighborhood as the 'bike mechanic' during his younger years.

The diligent work of law enforcement resulted in the arrests of 23-year-old Cahlil Felix of Pennsauken and 23-year-old Kelly Joyner-Stewart of Philadelphia. Felix was apprehended without incident in Cherry Hill. Joyner-Stewart was already incarcerated on unrelated drug and handgun possession offenses at the time she was charged. Both were charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder for their alleged roles in the death of Jovany Torres.
