In the city of Camden, New Jersey, a young man's life was violently cut short in a deadly act of betrayal. Twenty-one-year-old Alfredo Martinez was killed on March 9, 2007, in a double homicide that also claimed the life of his 20-year-old companion, Jesse Hernandez. The two were seated in Hernandez's car, unaware that their lives were about to end in a dispute over money.
The motive for this brutal crime was a plan to steal $22,000 in drug money that was supposed to be divided among four individuals. Inside the vehicle with Martinez and Hernandez was Christopher Figueroa, who, at close range, fatally shot both men in the head. The force of the event caused the car to flip over, at which point Figueroa managed to escape the wreckage.
Waiting for him was his accomplice, Jason Rodriguez, and together they fled with the stolen cash, leaving a scene of chaos and death behind them.
The investigation into the slayings ultimately led to the apprehension of both Figueroa and Rodriguez. For his role in the killings, Christopher Figueroa was sentenced to 25 years in state prison on a conviction of aggravated manslaughter. Jason Rodriguez, the driver of the getaway car, received a seven-year sentence for his part in the robbery and for related weapons offenses.
