Maurice Kennedy "Mike" Chenoweth, aged 48, was the owner of the Lumberjack Tavern in Big Bay, Michigan. On the night of July 31, 1952, Chenoweth was shot and killed by U.S. Army Lieutenant Coleman Peterson. The incident occurred in the Lumberjack Tavern, where Peterson entered and, without speaking, fired six shots from a 9 mm German Luger automatic pistol directly into Chenoweth, who collapsed and died behind the bar.
